INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY OF THE "INNITOU SKI RUNNERS" SKI CLUB
The Innitou Ski Runners ski club is a non-profit organization, located in Glen NH., owned and maintained by its active members. Funding for operation is generated from dues ($330/year.), guest fees and fund-raisers. The club is overseen by its Board of Directors and Officers, whom are elected from the Active membership. The club's primary function is to provide local lodging at an affordable price, to promote recreational skiing and to offer social activities for its members and guests. There is lodging for 26 Females and 26 Males at the club.
The Innitou Ski Runners ski club is a member of the Eastern Inter-Club Ski League (EICSL). EICSL organizes racing and social activities among its member ski clubs (about 25 in all). Through EICSL and its large number of members, we are able to obtain reduced cost lift tickets, discounts at many ski shops and restaurants, both locally and in Massachusetts.
Our club was founded in 1938 by a group of ski enthusiasts from Woburn. The old Indian name "Innitou" is associated with several locations in Woburn, such as the lake now known as Horne Pond. The early Innitous also cut their teeth on a ski jumping hill overlooking the lake, hence the origin of the name of their new club, the Innitou Ski Runners.
The first Innitous would take the famous ski trains of the 40's up to North Conway, and over the years, would rent rooms in the old Abbott's Lodge, or the upstairs room in what is now the Shannon Door. Looking for a permanent home, in 1958 the club organized into a corporation with our first official President, Bob McSheffrey. For the grand sum of $12,500 the club purchased an old turn of the century farm house in Glen that had been in the Grant family since 1913.
Gradually over the years, through the hard work and initiative of several generations of Innitous, that old farm house has been transformed into the lodge we all enjoy today. What is now our Rec. Room was originally a barn that during the 60's was incorporated into the main house. In the early 70's our parking lot was constructed. Believe it or not, in the 60's, Innitous would park their cars on what is now the front lawn. Try doing that today and see how many parking tickets you can accumulate! In 1978 when the original mortgage was paid off, the club refinanced to put on a major addition to the Rec. Room area where our wood burning stove is now located, and upstairs, the Men's Bath. Ask a veteran of the 70's where the Men's Bath used to be!
The Innitou spirit of hard work and dedication continued in the 80's and 90's. Major projects included new windows and insulation (it was mighty cold in the old house on those windy days in the winter!!!), renovations to the upstairs bunk rooms, carpeting throughout the house, the deck for our summer enjoyment, and the wet bar for year-round fun. When you are enjoying our modern facilities and amenities, stop for a moment and reflect on the work of past generations of Innitous whose efforts have made the club what it is today.
